We’re Cuckoo for Cuphead

With the exception of a long-standing app addiction to The Simpsons Tapped Out, Valerie’s love of video games ended with her Atari 2600. Until last month, that is. Valerie saw a trailer for Cuphead a year ago and shared it with Devon. The link below is a collection of what first excited us. It’s traditionally animated in the style of a 1930s cartoon with period jazz music and was seven years in the making.

Devon’s had an Xbox One since it was initially released but had only played discs. Because Cuphead is available only as a download, we had to run several gigs worth of updates before we could install the game. (Was it worth the effort? Cuphead is so good that Valerie bought a second remote the following week, so she could join him.)

As Cuphead, Devon spends a fair bit of his time bringing Valerie’s character, Mugman, back from the dead. Valerie’s dreadful, and Devon’s good at parrying (a move needed to bring a character back, when it’s floating away in ghost form). Devon’s accumulated several soul contracts, which are awarded only when a challenge is played in regular mode. We’re only about halfway through but have had hours of fun so far, swearing and laughing as we fight our way through the battles and levels.

Devon’s started following Cuphead posts from several of its creators on Valerie’s Twitter feed. We love the design and music, so Devon's creating his own characters. He wants animation software for his laptop, so he can learn to animate his art traditionally. He’s taking music as one of his after-school programs, so he’ll be able to incorporate an original soundtrack into his videos.

If you’re interested in Cuphead, we’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Check the trailer to see why Cuphead sold two million copies last month.

Devon’s created his own character to join Cuphead and Mugman on their adventures. Valerie asked Devon what that character tastes like, and he says Sprite. That might be TMI.

Devon’s character after his invincibility powers have been triggered. Ka ma ha ma ha!

Devon’s ghost! Come on, Cuphead and Mugman! Go for a parry!

Devon created these rat creature cannons in the spirit of Cuphead. You can parry on their noses.

Tired of jelly beans, cupcakes and waffles? Devon added a red hot fireball to the fray.

Meet the Demolition Derby Fire Car, before its transformation.

Oh, no! The Demolition Derby Fire Car has transformed into monster mode.

Hey Mad Scientist and your Iron Giant Robot creation, check out this Brain Bot. He’s eager to burn Cuphead, Mugman, and Devon!

Here’s an anachronism for you, an 80s arcade game fighting in a 1930s universe.

So cute, and yet...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Cuphead: Huh? That’s not scary.

Poor clown. Although no one really feels sorry for clowns...
